Rough-In Electrical Inspection Checklist (NEC 2023/2026)
Mandatory technical requirements and inspection checkpoints to guarantee passing municipal building inspections and avoiding re-inspection penalty fees.
📋 Critical Inspection Checkpoints
NM-B cable must be stapled within 12 inches of each plastic box (within 8 in. if no clamp) and every 4.5 feet along studs.
Conductors, grounds, internal clamps and devices must not exceed allowable cubic-inch volume per NEC 314.16.
Cables routed through stud holes less than 1-1/4 inches from edge must have 1/16-inch steel nail plates installed.
All metal boxes, equipment grounds, and pigtails must be crimped or wire-nutted in every junction box before rough inspection.
Maintain minimum 1-inch separation from steam pipes, hot water lines, and metal chimneys.
❌ Top 4 Most Common Inspection Failures
- ❌ Missing nail protection plates on framing studs less than 1.25 inches from edge.
- ❌ Overfilled junction boxes exceeding cubic-inch conductor capacity.
- ❌ Unsecured Romex cable within 12 inches of enclosure boxes.
- ❌ Failure to bond electrical panel to water main and ground rods.
💡 Re-Inspection Avoidance Protocol
Leave all junction box covers off and expose all cables for inspector view. Do not install any drywall or insulation before the green approval sticker is affixed.
